Portland is a city with an increasingly growing retail sector. Substantial growth to the population and recent rental inflations are creating a rapidly changing face to the burgeoning area. The result is a new wave of opportunistic entrepreneurs. Amongst the flood of creative offices and donuts shops, there is a fresh group of young businesses and driven creatives, poised to offer the city's next unique experience.

"AS A BARBER YOU HELP PEOPLE BETTER THEMSELVES, IT'S THE SAME THING WITH CLOTHES."

By The Collective, is a new boutique - well sort of. What makes this shop different is you can stop and get a straight razor shave while you're there. Making it not only a progressive shopping experience, but somewhat of an intimate hangout. While we stopped through, there were several people lounging on couches talking while they waited for cuts. We sat down with Jaylon Butte and Kyle James, their clippers still in hand as they explained how the brand began, and their friendship with Wookie Fields of Jaefields (who also co-founded the new shop on 205 SW Pine).

The store is a relaxed setting, with clothing lining every wall of the small shop. Recognizable Jaefields and By The Collective branded garments, sit next to a variety of shoes and accessories. The idea of the lounge boutique experience grew organically, and out of necessity for the duo. In the past, clients would get a haircut, and then "literally drive all the way across town to go pick up a T-shirt." After talks with their good friend Wookie of Jaefields, the concept for the By The Collective store front was born.

“When we met Wookie we began to notice how closely fashion, and hair went together for people who cared. We’ve been working with Jaefields for a while now modeling, traveling, and cutting hair. And the Collective is something that we’ve talked about for at least two years... So when Wookie said he wanted to start a store, it just made sense.”

The brand's recent store opening was a packed house with performances by the likes of Last Artful Dodgr and Martell Webster. Make sure to stop in for a cut or shave, after you check out at the register.
