Spotlight by Aaron Levy
Just off East Vancouver's Main Street shopping district, at the base of the Mt. Pleasant neighborhood, sits the Canadian-born menswear label Wings + Horns. The shop, one of only several on my “can’t miss” list, was a welcomed turn away from the more bustling, well known shopping destinations in downtown Vancouver’s Gastown district.
In its 12th year, the label has become known for staple pieces geared toward an outdoor Canadian lifestyle - knit thermals, hoodies, twill pants, and parkas - with a distinctly Japanese attention to detail and fit. It has gained wider recognition in recent years after collaborating with the likes of New Balance, Danner, and Club Monaco.
Founder Craig Atkinson was also featured on the 2015 edition of Hypebeast 100 for his contributions and influence in contemporary menswear.
The brand’s beautiful showroom, designed by well-known Vancouverite Dallas Matson, is a bright and airy mix of rich, orange hardwood, polished cement and black steel.
“I THINK VANCOUVER AND JAPAN DRAW A LOT OF PARALLELS IN OUR ARCHITECTURE AND OUR CULTURE, AND WE TAKE FROM THAT AS WELL,” - RAEKHA MERNER, RETAIL OPERATIVE
Their parent company CYC Design Corporation, which started out in the late 1990s as a manufacturer for other sport and streetwear labels like Arc'teryx and Supreme, now makes clothes solely for house brands Wings and Horns and Reigning Champ.
If you’re ever in Vancouver B.C., make sure these places are within your list of destinations!
